ILEX / DATR: The ILEX/DATR computational lexicology venture is an informal departmental project which started in 1989 and has since produced many publications and project reports. It started an attempt to limit the set of possible theories in Evans and Gazdar's DATR formalism, by using sign-based linguistic constraints. in computational lexicology.
Most recently, an efficient DATR engine, Zdatr V2.0 has been developed for ILEX and other DATR applications, in cooperation with Grigoriy Strokin, U Moscow. See The ILEX/DATR site and the HyprLex page for software, applications, papers, archive.
EAGLES: The EAGLES (Expert Advisory Groups on Language Engineering Standards) project, funded by the European Commission, ran during two phases in the 3rd and 4th Framework Programmes.
In Phase I was coordinating and technical editor for the EAGLES Spoken Language Working Group (SLWG); the output of the SLWG was published as:
Dafydd Gibbon, Roger Moore, Richard Winski, eds. (1987). Handbook of Standards and Resources for Spoken Language Systems. Berlin: Mouton de Gruyter.
The results of Phase II, which finished in early 1999, are still being reviewed.
See also the EAGLES SLWG site. The Bielefeld project scientists involved in the EAGLES project were Doris Bleiching and Inge Mertins.
VERBMOBIL: In the ASL (Architectures for Speech and Language) project (1991-1992), new concepts for feature-driven finite state devices in speech recognition were developed. In VERBMOBIL Phase I (1992-1996), this work was continued, and extended in the domain of lexicon and morphology, where I coordinated the lexicographic work and developed the `HyprLex' concept for online lexica. See: Phase 2 (1997-1999) involves coordination of the coverage of the VERBMOBIL lexicon, provision of wordlists, paradigm extensions to the wordlists, and pronunciation dictionaries. The technology used is related to the ILEX/DATR approach, but in fact implemented in Prolog.
At various times, the following project scientists were involved in the Bielefeld ASL and VERBMOBIL projects: Frederek Althoff, Doris Bleiching, Julie Carson-Berndsen, Guido Drexel, Kerstin Fischer, Hagen Langer, Harald Lüngen, Inge Mertins, Martina Pampel, Sabine Reinhard, Christoph Schillo.
Graduiertenkolleg: ``Aufgabenorientierte Kommunikation''; see also graduate students Kerstin Fischer, Katrin Kirchhoff, Shu-chuan Tseng
