Granularity

ISO 12620 (1998) gives a number of data categories, including broader categories that are superordinate to other data categories. If the more specific data categories are present the more general categories do not have to be included. In fact according to Schmitz (1997) they should not be included but the finest granularity of data categories should always be taken. Of course not all specific data categories are useful for all languages (the category `inflection' is relevant for English nouns and their plural, but for German nouns `inflection' can be subdivided for the different cases), consequently the `finest granularity' is language dependent.
